    Abstract

The Arab Spring in Syria – and the ensuing war – created an opportunity for transnational jihadists who were under pressure and languishing in Iraq and Afghanistan. Without the war in Syria, it is doubtful that the Islamic State could have grown powerful enough to declare their Islamic caliphate in the summer of 2014. So, what did the Arab Spring mean for the transnational jihadist movement?
