Special issue: Scarcity, natural resources and conflict in Africa

Research output: Book, Anthology, Thesis, ReportAnthologyResearchpeer-review

Abstract

This special issue is framed by the wide range of localized studies that link notions of resource use and scarcity to conflict and its violent potential on the African continent. Combined, the collection of papers argues that within the past 10 years, what is considered scarce, and levels of competition and contestation when it comes to resources, have reinforced and added new dimensions to long-standing trends in conflict relations. They stem from a push to control hitherto undesired areas and peripheral drylands for purposes of nature conservation expansions, investments in solar panels, windmills and geothermal energy, and demands for precious minerals by the tech industry that play a central role in the global green energy transition.
