Abstract
This summary report is based on a roundtable meeting on 6 April 2016 at Yangon University, which brought together scholars, consultants, and civil
society representatives who followed the 2016 local elections in different localities of the country. The purpose was to discuss the experiences with the local election process, how local people perceived the elections and what roles the administrators play in local social and political life. It also presents an
opportunity to discuss the future role of the WA/VTAs in the current political transition of Myanmar, including weaknesses of the current laws that regulates this field. These matters should be understood in the broader debate about local governance reform and decentralisation in Myanmar.
