Abstract

This podcast is about one of the major challenges on the international security agenda today, namely the continued relevance of transnational jihadist movements, such as Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. It is part of the 5-year research project “Explaining Transnational Jihad – Patterns of Escalation and Containment” funded by the European Research Council. The first episode is an introduction to the project, and focuses particularly on why it is important to know more about the patterns of escalation and containment related to jihadist conflicts, why theology is important and how to think about key concepts such as transnationalization. The episode is recorded during an intensive research workshop and contains an honest conversation between three members of the research team, namely the PI Mona Kanwal Sheikh, Post doc. Saer el-Jaichi and PhD candidate Dino Krause. The podcast episode is a special edition of the DIIS podcast.
