Abstract

A small atoll in the middle of the Pacific once housed the military base from where French nuclear testing cemented France as one of the 20th century’s largest nuclear powers. 20 years after the French left, the local population is still grappling with the consequences of nuclear radiation and waste as well as a strong nostalgic longing for a nuclear past filled with prospects, prosperity and parties.
