Project Details
Description
Recent years have witnessed increased tension in the Baltic Sea area as relations between, on the one hand, Russia and, on the other hand, the six NATO member states and the two neutrals states have deteriorated sharply: Military deployments and exercises have become still more openly directed at “the other side” and the region seems to have fallen victim to a greater geo-political rivalry.
Russian president Vladimir Putin’s 23 SEP 2015 announcement that Russia may deploy SS-26 nuclear missiles in Kaliningrad illustrates the current climate.
The project aims to:
1) provide an overview of the deployments and exercises (including scenarios) implemented in recent years and to
2) offer recommendations for how to handle the Baltic Sea neighbor which is Russia.
Recommendations will relate to both confidence-building measures and to organizational settings (e.g. NATO, Council of the Baltic Sea States and NORDEFCO).
