Middle Power Liberal Internationalism in an illiberal world

    Project: Research

    Project Details

    Description

Recent political and economic developments have caused a growing sense of unease regarding the durability of the liberal international order. The rise of Far Right movements and populism, the increasingly isolationist foreign policies of the United States, the widespread opposition to economic globalization and the growing strength of illiberal powers such as China and Russia indicate that the
institutions and values that have governed the post-war world order may be no longer be taken for granted. Against this background, this workshop revisits the relevance of 'middle power liberal internationalism'. Bringing together scholars from three countries traditionally seen as 'like-minded internationalists' and representatives of middle power liberal internationalism' , the workshop combines theoretical investigations of the changing world order with close scrutiny of foreign policy practices. It contributes both to debates about
the changing nature of power and authority in global governance and to policy discussions concerning contemporary threats to the liberal world order and responses to them.
