Project Details
Description
The project consists of two inter-related parts. Firstly, it characterizes the system of Arctic (great power) politics and institutions, as it has developed from 2007 until 2016, based on fresh empirical evidence. As one aspect of this, the project traces the continued (2015-16) effects of the ongoing Ukraine conflict on
Arctic cooperation.
Secondly, as its main contribution, the project investigates the Nordic input into the system of Arctic politics; the main military aspect is part of NORDEFCO (that Denmark is chairing in 2016). The Danish Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland are all part of the Arctic Council, whereas the two former are also among the Arctic-5 (the Polar Sea coast states). Based on a series of interviews and other materials, it is analyzed how the Nordic input is conditioned by both cooperative incentives and mutual jealousies among the five countries.
