Primary research areas

Ninna Nyberg Sørensen’s research focuses on the tension between migration, conflict and development. She explores local and international processes leading to forced and voluntary migration, regulatory measures, and the effects of migration on local communities and states in the global South.

Current research

Ninna Nyberg Sørensen is a cultural sociologist and ethnograper interested in global migration dynamics. Her work explores the relationship between regular and irregular migration, multidirectional movements (including deportation), the workings of the migration industry, migrant disappearances, and trafficking in persons. She is also interested in the connections between climate change, migration and humanitarian interventions.

Projects

Ninna Nyberg Sørensen is currently leading a larger international research group exploring children and youth’s perceptions of climate change in Ethiopia and how such perceptions influence their mobility aspirations. For the projects duration (2023-2027), she is attached to Addis Ababa university and OSSREA. See PATHWAYS.

She is also involved in a research project exploring the relationship between climate change, mobility and governance in Ethiopia and Ghana. Her contribution primarily concerns the relation between internal displacement, international flight and migration in Ethiopia. See GCM

A project on human trafficking from, within and to the Dominican Republic was finalized in 2021. The project explored the socio-political circumstances that make people vulnerable to human trafficking as well as state policies aimed at preventing it. She remains attached to the National Institute of Migration in Santo Domingo.
