Description
Forests play a critical role in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development. Global deforestation is a pressing issue, with forested areas more than twice the size of Denmark disappearing each year. Deforestation contributes to 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and forests are home to 80% of the world’s animal and plant species and cover about one-third of habitable land area. Protecting forest ecosystems is therefore crucial.Tropical forests, in particular, are key components of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that can help address societal challenges through ecosystem protection, restoration, and sustainable management. It is anticipated that NbS, along with greater integration of forests as a climate mitigation tool, will be a central topic at COP30 this year in Brazil. With Denmark holding the EU Council Presidency during this period, there is a unique opportunity to advocate for commitments and financing to support NbS forest initiatives.
In accordance with the aims of the Danish NbS Knowledge Platform, this seminar aims to facilitate further knowledge exchange and generate learning focused on the potential of Nature-based Solutions in tropical forest ecosystems.
