    Description

Centre of African Studies is happy to announce its next seminar: 'Somalia post 2016: Challenges and Opportunities' by DR ALI SAID FAQI, Ambassador of Somalia to Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France and the European Union About the seminar: Somalia has been slowly progressing for quite some time, but still faces political, institutional and security challenges. The modality and the results of the forthcoming elections to be held in Somalia in late September through the first week of November 2016 will determine the country’s future direction. The need for smooth and successful elections is paramount to avoid further polarization of the country and to provide confidence – grounded in clear public support – to anyone who wins, to address the challenges facing the country. Such challenges are numerous and are not limited to building of the Somali National Army, completion of the federation of the country, fighting al-shabab, securing national borders and seas, collecting taxes and enforcing the rule of law. On the other hand, economic growth, public maturity and political will from Somalia’s leaders are prerequisites as well as opportunities for dealing with these substantial challenges. In this presentation focus will be placed on addressing the overarching and complex issues facing Somalia and to exploring ways forward to achieve a peaceful and stable Somalia.
