News of Russian soldiers raping Ukrainian women has again brought wartime sexual violence to the public attention. While research emerging after the war rapes in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Rwanda in the 1990's looked for mono-causal explanations, new research focuses on the armed organizations and distinguishes between top-down and bottom-up dynamics of violence.
