Description
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a major development strategy proposed by the Chinese government and focusing on cooperation and connectivity in the broader geographic Eurasia region. It is intended to deepen China’s integration into the global economy and in the process represents a new stage in China’s foray into multilateralism. The BRI encompasses the creation of new infrastructure and connectivity across a wide spectrum of economic sectors and activities (road, sea, energy, digital) and involves financial investment on a grand scale. Given its wide scope, its reach goes beyond economic and financial aspects; its potential to massively transform global trade and infrastructure implies also a deep impact on politics and on the new patterns of transnational governance which are taking shape.Understanding the opportunities and challenges posed by the BRI for transnational governance and the role of Europe in this context is essential. In this respect, the aim of the high-level policy dialogue organised at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence between the EUI's School of Transnational Governance (STG) and Fudan University is to bring together academics, policy-makers, market participants, officials, and members of civil society in order to discuss and exchange views on the BRI, its implications for Europe and for the broader transformation of transnational governance.
Attendance at the event is by invitation only and takes place under Chatham House rules.
