Digitizing sex work. Perspectives on precarity and security for sex workers in Brazil and the Netherlands

Activity: Participating in or Organising an EventParticipation in or Organisation of Workshop, Roundtable, Seminar, Course

Description

In the last few years, many sex workers have migrated partially or completely to digital platforms using camming and/or selling photo and video packs. In Brazil, sex work has never been regulated, relegating many sex workers to a marginalized, precarious, and insecure reality. Based on empirical research in Brazil, including extensive interviews with 32 sex workers, in this talk Cristiane will discuss how the regulation of sex work and new digital platforms impacts sex workers’ perceptions of security, privacy, and precariousness. Cristiane’s findings show that Brazilian sex workers see digitalization as a safer way to perform their services, but they also face new concerns in adopting digital technologies. By bringing a comparative perspective to the regulations around sex work in the Netherlands, Cristiane's research further shows how the historical and social context in which sex work is inserted, builds different perceptions about the uses and implications of technologies.
