    Abstract

The report analyses the transformation of Arab politics in the years after the Arab Uprisings in 2011. Through a series of country-based illustrations it documents the increase in great power competition in the region, the increase in regime-orchestrated repression, the return of military in politics, the radicalization of contentious politics, and the polarization of public opinion since 2011. The report concludes that by mid-2015, a new and far more unstable hybrid of authoritarian rule has emerged in the Arab region. In consequence it calls for governments in the region and beyond not to let short term security concerns overshadow continued need for long-term political, economic and cultural reforms.
