Abstract
The blog post examines the phenomenon of “runaway boats” — vessels that, after migrants are transferred to rescue ships, turn back toward their departure point — as a consequence of the EU’s externalization of migration control and the criminalization of humanitarian rescuers. It argues that such policies do not stop migration but instead increase the dangers of sea crossings and undermine the predictability and safety of rescue operations.
