Myanmar's crisis worsened by earthquake

On March 28., a massive earthquake struck Myanmar, killing and wounding thousands, and destroying important infrastructure. The earthquake has hit an already vulnerable population suffering from extreme weather events and years of heavy fighting between Myanmar’s military junta and resistance movements. For the past five years, Helene Maria Kyed and Justine Chambers from the Danish Institute for International Studies have researched how climate change and military conflict in Myanmar interlink and how this impact people on the ground. They discuss their key findings and how the recent earthquake affects the political situation in Myanmar. Helene Maria Kyed and Justine Chambers’ research is part of the wider project ”MyCClimate - Myanmar: Climate Actions, Conflict and Peacebuilding”, which is funded by Danish Development Research fund, under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is a collaborative research project between DIIS and Myanmar researchers and students, Chiang Mai University and the Highland Institute.
