    Despite comprehensive US led international efforts countering terrorism in the Middle East and The Horn of Africa, terrorism is increasing and peaking in these years. In this context, Iraq and Somalia are especially interesting as case studies as they both have experienced increasing fragmentation and been exposed to US counterinsurgency (COIN) strategies. This project explores three questions:
    1. How has political violence locally and regionally developed in Somalia and Iraq after 9/11?
    2. How can the interplay between US COIN and the increase in political violence and state fragmentation be interpreted?
    3. What are the relations between COIN and state building in Iraq and Somalia?
