This PhD project examines why Yemeni men join, participate in, and leave the Houthi movement. It investigates how Yemeni men understand the movement and how they interpret their own trajectories within it.
The project explores how localized constructions of identity—across tribal, religious, political, gendered, and class lines—shape decisions to engage with the movement. By focusing on the lived experiences and narratives of the men themselves, the project seeks to understand how individuals move through the movement and how their involvement is shaped by shifting social expectations and identities.
Empirically, the project combines life-history interviews with members and former members of the movement with analysis of Houthi speeches and zamil poetry disseminated through the group’s media channels. Together, these sources are used to examine how the movement mobilizes ideals of identity and how these resonate with Yemeni men.
