Brexit and the Arctic

Aktivitet: Deltagelse i eller arrangering af en begivenhedDeltagelse i eller organisering af workshop, rundbordssamtale, seminar og kursus

    Beskrivelse

In late September 2018, during the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, the Defense Secretary, Gavin Williamson, announced the launch of a new Arctic Defense Strategy for the United Kingdom. This was a significant response to a number of recent parliamentary committee reports that had drawn attention to the UK's interests in the Arctic, perceived deficiencies, and the changing geopolitical situation. This initiative must be seen in the context of challenges to NATO, the implementation of Brexit and the security future of the North Atlantic. The United Kingdom is re-drawing attention to the 'Greenland-Iceland-UK gap' as part of a potential future role in the North Atlantic and High North, as its position in Europe undergoes transformation. In this event, Dr. Richard C. Powell from the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University will guest DIIS to provide us with an overview of these developments. Speakers Richard C.
